Educating parents and youth about risky Internet behaviour is just one part of Microsoft Canada's commitment to online safety. Microsoft is also dedicated to exploring key public policy issues as they relate to online safety, such as child exploitation and cyberbullying.
Microsoft Canada works with the University of Toronto's Centre for Innovation Law and Policy (CILP) to address social, legal and policy issues and in 2005 published a white paper following the CILP's first International Symposium on Online Child Exploitation. The report, Safely Connected: Strategies for Protecting Children and Youth from Sexual Exploitation Online, identified three major areas for improvement in online safety law and policy:
- education of children, parents and the public;
- training for police services and specialized Crown prosecutors;
- encouraging Internet Service Providers and related industries to be a part of ending online child exploitation.
In December 2007, an updated white paper was released.
