April 10 to 16 is National Volunteer Week, and with 12.5 million Canadians generously dedicating their time to make a positive impact in communities and sectors across Canada, now is the perfect time to thank them for their selfless work.
Each year, Canadians volunteer 2.1 billion hours - equivalent to about 1.1 million full-time jobs - and our friends at Volunteer Canada are encouraging you to recognize those everyday heroes who contribute their energy and expertise to your community by sending them a personalized e-card.
At Microsoft Canada, we are proud to have wonderful employees who are committed to improving the community both locally and abroad. Our team includes people like Joseph Sgandurra, a long-time volunteer for Microsoft’s Take Back the Net program, and Ruth Gastle, co-chair of Cambodia Legal Education for Women (CLEW), a not-for-profit service that raises funds to pay for the complete university education of rural Cambodian women.
“We are so inspired by the millions of volunteers who are committed to improving the lives of people across the globe, and we’re glad that Microsoft Canada’s team is a part of that dedicated group,” says Gavin Thompson, Director of Corporate Citizenship, Microsoft Canada.
Through Microsoft Canada’s I Volunteer program, each full-time employee is given up to 40 paid hours per year to volunteer for the charity of their choice. The program was created by employees for employees, with the goal of enabling the team to share their most valuable asset – their talents and time. This opportunity translates into great experience for employees, who often gain knowledge and skills they can use in the workplace.
